After years of promises and delays, things were getting really hopeful that the era of OLED TVwas finally within sight, kicked off by LG and Samsung with the release of two 1080p 55-inchcurved screen sets (55EA9800 and KN55S9).
However, according to a report just posted by Nikkei, it looks like the luster of OLED TV may be starting to dim as indications are that Samsung could be pulling back on the high-performance technology, despite showing off bendable OLED TV prototypes at the 2014 CES.
As I have reported for the past several years, although OLED TV technology is capable of producing the deepest blacks and naturally saturated, accurate color, the problem is they are inherently very expensive to manufacture, translating into high retail prices.
As a result, the World's largest TV maker may devote more resources to LED/LCD 4K Ultra HD TV R&D and production, which are more cost-effective to manufacture and more affordable for consumers.
On the other hand, so far, Samsung's direct competitor in the OLED TV space, LG, has not indicated that it will be scaling back on production of their sets, and, in fact, has recently released a second model, the 55EA8800 Gallery Edition, and is also projected to bring several more OLED TV models to market in late 2014 or early 2015, including a 77-inch Flexible Screen 4K Ultra HD OLED TV (shown in the left side of the photo at the top of this post).
